Warming the car in the morning: Fact or Myth?

  My Dad always warm up his car in the morning for 5-10 minutes without fail. When, I started to drive my own car, he always advises me to do the same. But I always wonder if warming up car really necessary? This is a controversial topic. Many people like my father will argue that warming the car before use in the morning is a definite thing to do because it will allow the oil to travel to all parts of the engine, thus prolonging engine life. But on the other hand, people like Mike Harrison, Ford's V-8 engine programs manager will also argue that warming car in the morning is a total myth. I quote Mr. Harrison words: “In the past, when cars had carburetors, engines used thick oil that required warming up, but today's thinner oils allow engines to be driven away sooner, making idling unnecessary.” Also, modern cars nowadays do not use carburetors anymore; they all use electronic fuel injectors.

  So, what is the answer for this issue? Well, Mike Perry, a veteran mechanic with General Motor said: “What I tell my customers when they’ve asked me this question over the years: in ordinary summer, spring, or fall weather – get into your car, start the engine, and while putting on your seat belt, getting comfortable, checking your mirrors and turning on your radio, 30-45 seconds have passed, so put it in gear and off you go.”

  Therefore, unless you live in extremely cold place like Alaska, you don’t have to warm up your car for 5-10 minutes anymore. Mike Perry said 30-45 seconds is all you need.

1. Before you go:

1. Obey all traffic rules.
2. Do not speed.

5. Do not take shortcuts that you are not familiar with.
6. Enjoy the drive.

3. In case of a break down:

1. Do not panic.
2. If you are able to pull over, pull over slowly by using your hazard lights. If you are not able to pull over, be cautious when stopping in the middle of the road. When possible, push your vehicle to the side of the road.
3. Assess the situation. Determine if the situation is serious or not.
4. If you think you can handle the situation, handle it by following the procedure, refer to the car manual.
5. If you can’t handle the situation, call the number that you have, be it friends or family, or the emergency hotline provided by your car dealer.
6. Know where you are. Identify any landmarks so that people can find you.

4. In case of an accident:

1. Assess the situation. If you are not injured, go to the other party and see if they need any help.
2. If any of you suffer serious injury, call an ambulance right away.
3. If not then discuss with the other party about the accident. Avoid getting into a fight.
4. Call police to assess the accident if necessary.
5. If you car is badly damaged, call a tow truck or emergency number that you have.

What do the numbers in the motor oil actually means?

      Every time I went to service my car, I always get confused by the numbers on the motor oil packaging. There are 5W-30, 10W-30, 10W-40, etc. So what does these numbers means? And what is the W stands for? Finally, I found out that the W stands for Winter and the first number before the W indicates how well the oil will perform in cold temperature. So, the lower the first number is, the better the oil will perform in cold temperature. What about the second number then? It is actually just the opposite from the first number. The second number indicates how well the oil will perform in hot temperature. The higher the second number is, the better the oil will perform in hot temperature.
      So, the next questions is, why all these matters? It matters because oil thickened in cold temperature and gets thinner in hot temperature. You don’t want the oil to get too thick when operating in cold temperature as it can damage the engine. On the other hands, oil get thin and burn in hot temperature, also causing damage to the engine.
